The Sentience series is based on automatic drawing techniques developed over decades of practice, first as moving single line drawings made on public transport, then later developed for the conscious series of paintings based on sketch book single line drawings.

The fascination for me with automatic drawing has been to shift away from the imposition of an idea into a drawing, to instead drawing as an exploration. As a former architect and inventor, the idea was always the dominant element, with the drawing relegated to being the vehicle of communication.

With automatic drawing, the line takes on a new role, one of discovery. Allowing for the finding of an artwork and an exploration of perception, through a play with pareidolia and ambiguity.
